A long time ago (even before the World Wide Web) I went out on the Internet in search of information. I was a college student studying pre-med and getting sick of so many hard-set rules and regulations. I was surprised to find very little. I began keeping note of every place I found information regarding writing and/or journalism. Today, I have taken this information and placed in on the web for others (and myself).
I ended up graduating college with a Bachelor's Degree in psychology and sociology. I did not, however, end up working full time in either field, per say. I was called home to care for my mother who was ill with cancer. There were simply no jobs available in our small town. One day I was at the public library feeling especially down and I came across a small classified in the newspaper. "Small town paper needs reporter." I recognized the number as being from my hometown and met with the editor that very day.
Since I had no formal writing experience, I ended up taking short stories, poetry and college thesis papers to the interview as examples of my writing ability. The editor - Rudy - looked at me and said, "Well, I'm desperate and you are crazy. I'll see you Monday morning." Not the most hallowed words to begin a career, but they did the trick.
Rudy took his time with me and taught me most everything I know about news writing, layout and journalism. To make a long story a bit shorter, printer's ink is in my blood and shows no inclination of departing.
Now, here are some links, e-mail addresses, phone numbers and postal addresses of places to find information on the craft of writing. Most of my information is geared to those writers who do or would like to perform their craft via the Internet.
