Just like writers, book and magazine publishers tend to stick to one or two specific genres. This is done for a variety of reasons, but namely it is because it is easier on the ole checkbook to hire editors and focus marketing in one or two specific fields. Sometimes, book publishers are part of a university or institute of higher learning. A great deal of their publishing focuses on academics and/or research works.
In recent years, it has become the duty of the author (or the author's agent) to provide the leg work involved in marketing a book. It has been said the author who is willing to provide a market analysis of their manuscript, will be the one who receives the greatest attention from a publisher.
What goes into a market analysis? Well, there are many parts and some are much more in depth than others. The main focus should be what books are currently available at your local bookstore (or specialty shop) which cover the same or similar topics to your own, what makes your work different from the others currently available, and why your book will sell. You may also feel free to include a projected market for your piece (women 25-40, middle income, married, for example).
Publishers are also known to smile on the author who is willing to help out on the marketing duties. Book signings, press releases, etc. can be done by authors as long as the publisher's contract does not state otherwise. In addition, new authors should keep in mind that a publisher only plans a media blitz on any given book for about two months following publication. After that time, the fate of the book is laid to rest on the public. Any subsequent reprints will only come if the public takes a liking to the book and if the publisher sees there is a profit to be made.
There are many book publishers on-line, and to list them all on one page would be a terrible mistake for anyone who wanted to load them in an hour or less. So, I've divided them up into categories where appropriate. Please use the envelope graphic located at the bottom of any of my writers' pages if you feel that I have placed a publisher in the wrong category, if the publisher has changed genres, if the homepage of the publisher has moved, or if you would like to add a site. Thanks!
